Sensei Farms Unveils Eco-Friendly Packaging for Leafy Greens and Salad Mixes, Reducing Plastic Use by 90%

New packaging maintains functionality and food safety while offering an attractive, sustainable alternative without additional costs for retailers and consumers.

Sensei Farms has unveiled innovative packaging for its leafy greens and salad mixes, marking a significant move towards sustainability in the indoor-grown produce industry. This new packaging not only meets the functional and food safety standards expected by retailers and consumers but also introduces an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic clamshells.

The newly designed packaging achieves an impressive 90% reduction in plastic compared to Sensei Farms’ previous clamshells, based on weight. It features a paperboard tray with a transparent base and branded side windows, providing 360 degrees of product visibility. The tray includes perforated panels for easy breakdown and a removable liner to keep the paperboard clean for recycling.

Additionally, a “peel and reseal” closure maintains product freshness and offers convenient storage. The visually appealing design integrates smoothly into existing retail displays, distinguishing itself from other plastic alternatives.

Jessica Vasisht, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Sensei Farms, emphasizes the company’s commitment to innovation at every stage of production. “From seed to shelf, we strive for innovation at every stage of our products,” she states. “This focus allowed us to create a better, more impactful package that embodies the superior quality of our produce, without compromise.”

Despite the advanced features and environmental benefits, Sensei Farms ensures that these enhancements do not come with added costs for retailers and consumers. “Eco-friendly solutions often come with a premium on price, so we knew that barrier to adoption had to be removed,” says Ms. Vasisht. “This is a significant leap forward for our category and just the beginning of what Sensei Farms has planned.”

According to a press release, the new packaging will be available for product varieties at select Albertsons locations throughout the US Mid-Atlantic region, under the Acme and Safeway store banners, as well as major grocery stores across the Hawaiian Islands, starting in mid-Q3 2024.

Sensei Farms’ initiative represents a noteworthy advancement in sustainable packaging, reflecting the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining high standards of quality and safety for its consumers.
