Colombia Avocado Board Elects New Members

New leadership and a projected 216% increase in avocado exports highlight Colombia’s expanding presence in the U.S. market.

Four new board members were elected at the Colombia Avocado Board’s (CAB) annual meeting, marking an important step in the organization’s continued efforts to strengthen Colombia’s presence in the U.S. avocado market.

The nine-member board now includes two importers and two exporters, with Carlos Andres Londoño stepping in as the new Exporter Director.

He replaces Mauricio Moranth, who served as a CAB Exporter Director for several years. Londoño, representing Jardin Exotics, joins other distinguished directors who oversee key decisions and strategic initiatives to guide the market development of Colombian avocados in the United States.

According to a press release, the re-election of several key members also took place, underscoring the stability and continuity of leadership within the organization.

Kellen Newhouse, the CAB Treasurer and Importer Director from West Pak Avocado, Inc., and Sergio Plata Ortiz, who continues as Exporter Director and has been elected as Vice Chair on the Executive Committee, were both re-elected.

Additionally, Dustin Hahn of Naturipe Avocados retains his role as Importer Director, while Katheryn Mejia, representing Corpohass, was reappointed to the board.

The board’s nine directors serve two-year terms, with the possibility of re-election for subsequent terms. These individuals play a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of CAB and promoting the continued growth of Colombian avocados in the U.S. market.

“The Colombia Avocado Board greatly appreciates Mr. Mauricio Moranth for his dedicated time and contributions as a CAB Exporter Director, and we look forward to continuing our work together,” said Manuel Michel, CAB Managing Director.

“We are honored to collaborate with both new and longstanding association members who are committed to expanding the avocado category and strengthening Colombia’s reputation as a dependable, year-round source.”

The CAB’s commitment to quality and reliable supply is reflected in the remarkable growth of Colombian avocado imports to the U.S. since receiving approval to enter the market in 2017. In 2023, approximately 30 million pounds of Colombian avocados were shipped to the U.S.

Projections for 2024 indicate a dramatic increase to 95 million pounds, representing a 216% year-over-year rise. This surge in volume offers significant opportunities for retailers to expand their programs and introduce high-quality Colombian avocados to consumers across the country.

The strategic focus on quality, fast shipping times, and year-round availability of Colombian avocados has positioned the country as a reliable supplier in the avocado market. As the volume of exports continues to rise, the CAB is optimistic about the future, with plans to build on this momentum and achieve another record-breaking year.

The Colombia Avocado Board (CAB) was certified by the USDA on January 7, 2020, under the authorization of the Hass Avocado Promotion, Research, and Information Act of 2000. CAB works in coordination with the Hass Avocado Board to unify growers, exporters, and importers, promoting Colombian avocados through a cohesive marketing strategy aimed at U.S. consumers.
