Grimmway Farms recalls organic whole and baby carrots as FDA and CDC trace multistate E. coli outbreak to contaminated produce.
The FDA and CDC, in partnership with state and local health authorities, are actively investigating a multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121 infections.
The outbreak has been traced to organic whole and baby carrots distributed by Grimmway Farms, based in Bakersfield, California. As of now, 27 individuals have been interviewed regarding their food consumption prior to falling ill, and 96% (26 out of 27) reported consuming carrots during that period.
According to the FDA’s traceback efforts, Grimmway Farms has been identified as the common supplier of the implicated carrots. On November 16, 2024, the company initiated a voluntary recall of various quantities and brands of organic whole and baby carrots.
This recall includes retail-packaged organic whole carrots, which were available in stores between August 14 and October 23, 2024, and organic baby carrots with best-if-used-by dates ranging from September 11 to November 12, 2024. Grimmway Farms has notified its distributors to ensure these products are removed from circulation.
While the recalled products are likely no longer available for purchase, consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers, as carrots can remain edible for extended periods when properly stored.
Any recalled items should be discarded immediately to prevent potential health risks. Additionally, distributors and retailers who may have received these products are advised to inform their customers and adhere to the recall guidelines.
As stated in the FDA’s advisory, efforts are ongoing to identify the source of contamination and determine if other products may be affected.
