Melon Day Celebration Marks Continued Growth for Westside Produce and Classic Fruit Alliance

Strategic Partnership Thrives with New Varieties and Expanded Offerings

In an eagerly anticipated event, the Westside Produce/Classic Fruit alliance is set to celebrate Melon Day this Sunday, August 11, with significant milestones and a bright outlook for the future.

The companies have seen remarkable growth and are keen to promote increased melon consumption, leveraging new varieties and expanding their offerings to meet diverse customer needs.

The alliance, primarily known for supplying cantaloupe and honeydew during the domestic season, has introduced golden honeydews this spring and summer, which have been well-received for their excellent eating quality and vibrant color.

“The fruit has excellent eating quality and beautiful color, so we are excited to increase our acreage next year,” mentions Garrett Patricio, President of Westside Produce.

This move is part of their strategy to enhance their product range and strengthen their year-round programs.

Tom Conrado, VP of West Coast Sales at Classic Fruit, underscores the nutritional benefits of melons, making them an ideal summer snack.

“Summer is the perfect time to celebrate Melon Day because not only are melons a volume-driven commodity that offers opportunity in increasing foot traffic at store level, but it also is a great high-quality, refreshing snack alternative to the consumer,” states Conrado.

Highlighting the health benefits, he adds, “They pack a punch with Vitamin A, C, and D and are also high in potassium and beta carotene.”

The alliance’s strategic partnership has reached its second year, surpassing expectations and fostering strong team integration and communication.

“Year two has exceeded my expectations. Integration of and communication among the team has been fantastic, and when you operate collaboratively the results take care of themselves,” states Garrett Patricio.

Tom Conrado echoes this sentiment, noting the benefits of their synergies in boosting year-round programs and expanding their market presence.

As Melon Day approaches, the alliance is eager to inspire customers to discover new and enjoyable ways to consume melons.

Tara Monreal, Marketing Director for the alliance, shares creative ideas for enjoying melons, from pairing them with ice cream to incorporating them into salads. “Whether it’s with a scoop of ice cream or in a salad, there are so many different ways to enjoy melons,” comments Monreal.

The alliance also collaborated with the California Cantaloupe Advisory Board earlier this year to introduce the Possible Burger, a unique twist on the traditional burger using cantaloupe, which they see as a perfect way to celebrate Melon Day with friends and family.

The alliance’s continued innovation and commitment to quality have positioned them well for future growth.

With an eye on expanding their offerings and maintaining a steady supply of melons year-round, Westside Produce and Classic Fruit are set to make the most of their strategic alliance, ensuring customers have access to fresh, nutritious melons throughout the year.
