Mexican Mango Surge Fuels U.S. Demand Ahead of Cinco de Mayo

A fresh wave of premium Honey mangos from Mexico, complemented by increasing supplies from Central America, is set to energize the U.S. market as retailers gear up for robust summer demand and Cinco de Mayo promotions

The U.S. market is set to benefit from a surge in high-quality Honey mangos as the Mexican season ramps up, promising an abundant supply of this popular variety through the coming summer months.

Mission Produce is at the forefront of this development, with the supply of Honey mangos steadily increasing week after week.

“The U.S. is currently receiving a plentiful supply of high-quality Honey mangos out of Mexico. Demand has outpaced supply throughout March. While mangoes from Central America are expected to peak in April, Mexico’s season will continue into the fall.”

This welcome influx is driven by the fruit’s exceptional qualities, including its appealing size, renowned sweetness, and fiberless flesh, making it a favorite among consumers.

The seasonal availability is expected to last until around June or July, setting the stage for robust market activity during the peak summer period.

As the Mexican mango season gains momentum, Mission Produce is not only focusing on the highly sought-after Honey (Ataulfo) mangos but is also beginning to source light volumes of other varieties such as Haden and Tommy Atkins.

Although these additional varieties are being introduced in smaller quantities at the onset, their availability is anticipated to improve as the season progresses.

The strong emphasis on quality and variety is a strategic move designed to cater to the diverse preferences of U.S. consumers.

The complementary supply from Mexico is further bolstered by lighter imports from Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, ensuring that the market has a steady flow of mangoes from multiple origins throughout the year.

In the context of seasonal demand, the period from May through July is traditionally recognized as the strongest window for mango supply in the U.S.

During this time, Mission Produce is poised to deliver what it brands as its World’s Finest Mangos™ sourced from various origins.

This surge in supply comes at a time when consumer interest in mangoes is particularly high, thanks in part to key seasonal events such as Cinco de Mayo.

This major holiday, often considered the biggest mango celebration of the year, drives a significant spike in demand as retailers gear up with special promotions and custom ripe programs to capture the attention of mango enthusiasts.

The market dynamics this season have been shaped by recent successes in other regions as well.

Following a fruitful Peruvian mango season, industry players have noted that demand for mangoes has already outpaced supply in March, setting a positive tone for the upcoming months.

Favorable weather and growing conditions have contributed to volume projections that are notably higher compared to last year, reinforcing confidence in the seasonal outlook.

This robust demand, coupled with the anticipated influx of mangoes from Mexico and other regions, positions the market for a competitive and vibrant summer season.

In addition to the plentiful supply of Honey mangos, the extended season provided by Mexican growers offers a strategic advantage over Central American suppliers.

While mangoes from Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica are expected to reach their peak in April, the prolonged availability from Mexico which will continue well into the fall ensures a seamless supply chain.

This staggered production schedule minimizes the risk of market oversupply or shortages, allowing retailers to maintain a consistent product offering and avoid the disruptions that have occasionally plagued the market in previous years.

Looking ahead, the combination of increased supply and strong consumer demand is expected to stimulate significant activity in the mango market.

Retailers are preparing for large orders in the full week leading up to Cinco de Mayo, with many promotional campaigns kicking off as early as the preceding Wednesday.

This well-timed marketing strategy not only aims to capture the excitement around the holiday but also to secure return purchases, which are crucial for maintaining long-term consumer interest.

With all these factors aligned from enhanced supply from Mexico and complementary imports from Central America to the enthusiastic response from retailers and consumers the stage is set for what could be one of the most dynamic mango seasons in recent memory.
