New Queen, Key Partnership, and Honors Spotlight NWA Convention

2025 National Watermelon Queen crowned, labor support partnership announced, and outstanding industry figures celebrated at the annual NWA Convention in Austin

The National Watermelon Association (NWA) unveiled a series of significant developments at its annual National Convention in Austin, Texas, highlighting milestones that promise to influence the future of watermelon production and advocacy.

Bringing together growers, industry representatives, and passionate supporters, the convention served as the backdrop for the crowning of the 2025 National Watermelon Queen, the announcement of a new partnership for labor policy support, and the celebration of dedicated individuals who have shaped the association’s progress.

These events underscore the NWA’s mission to promote watermelon, provide resources for its members, and honor those contributing to its ongoing success.

Shortly after the convention concluded, the organization confirmed Elanie Mason formerly the Florida Watermelon Queen as the new 2025 National Watermelon Queen.

Mason’s appointment followed a competitive process involving multiple state watermelon queens, each showcasing her understanding of industry challenges, public engagement skills, and zeal for advocating on behalf of the crop.

Elanie will spend the next year traveling nationwide, making media appearances, supporting in-store promotions, and collaborating with various stakeholders to spread awareness about the versatility and benefits of watermelon.

“We are thrilled to have Elanie represent the watermelon industry as our 2025 National Watermelon Queen. Her enthusiasm, experience, and love for this industry make her an outstanding choice for this role. I’m also incredibly proud of Jules Singley, our outgoing 2024 National Watermelon Queen, for her dedication and grace over the past year. She set an incredible example, and I know Elanie will carry on that tradition beautifully.”

Kerri Lee Wiggins, NWA Promotions Coordinator

Mason’s journey to becoming the new national ambassador involved demonstrating a substantial command of promotional strategies and a strong commitment to the NWA’s outreach initiatives.

Her transition from representing Florida to serving the entire country is expected to broaden the association’s ability to connect with consumers and cultivate educational campaigns that spotlight watermelon’s nutritional advantages.

Elanie’s yearlong tenure will keep her on the move, building relationships with consumers, retailers, and growers throughout the nation.

The NWA believes her hands-on experience as a state queen will translate seamlessly into her extended promotional duties.

Beyond the excitement of the crowning, the NWA reinforced its commitment to member support by unveiling a strategic partnership with JPH Law Firm.

As labor regulations, particularly related to H-2A programs, continue to pose challenges for agricultural businesses, this collaboration aims to give NWA members streamlined access to expert legal counsel.

“This partnership with JPH Law Firm represents a major step forward in our efforts to support our members in one of the most critical areas of their business. Navigating labor laws especially H-2A regulations can be overwhelming, and having a trusted expert just a phone call away will be an invaluable resource for our industry.”

George Szczepanski, Executive Director of NWA

Echoing Szczepanski’s sentiments, Shawn Packer, Principal Member at JPH Law Firm, emphasized his firm’s dedication to guiding farmers through the complexities of ever-changing labor policies.

“We are thrilled to partner with the National Watermelon Association to offer direct legal support to its members. The agricultural labor landscape is complex and constantly changing, and our goal is to provide NWA members with the clarity and confidence they need to successfully manage their workforce. We look forward to working together to ensure they have the guidance and support necessary to thrive.”

In addition to announcing a new queen and offering vital labor policy assistance, the NWA took the opportunity to celebrate remarkable achievements within the watermelon community.

Three individuals were recognized for their unwavering commitment to advancing the industry’s interests.

Raymon Land was welcomed into the Watermelon Hall of Fame, honoring his decades-long devotion to farming and his service to both the National Watermelon Association and the Florida Watermelon Association.

He has continually been a pivotal force in fostering connections and expertise within the field.

Meanwhile, Jesse James Wiggins was presented with the Outstanding Service Award for his behind-the-scenes efforts, which include supporting the annual auction, assisting the Queen Program, and participating on volunteer committees.

His willingness to contribute in multiple capacities has consistently bolstered the association’s initiatives.

Looking to the next generation of growers, the Future Watermelon Farm Leader Award went to Chad Chastain, who represents eight generations of watermelon farming and is recognized for his innovation and dedication.

This year, the accolade was offered in memory of Dan Thomas, an NWA executive committee member who passed last year.

“We are incredibly proud to recognize Raymon, Jesse James, and Chad for their unwavering dedication to the watermelon industry,” said Szczepanski.

Through new leadership, strategic collaborations, and the celebration of exemplary service, the NWA’s latest announcements exemplify its mission to empower watermelon growers and promote the fruit’s value across the country.
