Strategic Deal Highlights Industry Transition from Vegetative to Seed-Propagated Strawberry Varieties
In a move that signals a growing industry-wide transition toward seed-based propagation of strawberries, Planasa, a leading global breeder of next-generation berry varieties, has officially acquired ABZ Seeds, a renowned developer of F1 hybrid strawberry seeds.
The acquisition, announced on 3 February 2025 in Andijk, the Netherlands, paves the way for Planasa’s further expansion into the high-growth F1 hybrid segment, while accelerating the company’s quest to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to farmers and consumers worldwide.
The agreement follows the retirement of ABZ Seeds’ founder and CEO, Gé Bentvelsen, and ensures that the company will continue its pioneering approach under Planasa’s ownership.
ABZ Seeds will maintain its independent operations in Andijk, guaranteeing clients the same high-quality products and services they have relied on for years.
“This acquisition allows us to expand our strawberry genetics portfolio and accelerates development of next-generation varieties to better suit the needs of our clients, growers, as well as retailers and end-consumers all over the world.”
Michael Brinkman, CEO at Planasa
By integrating ABZ’s respected breeding programs, Planasa seeks to leverage seed-propagated strawberry varieties as a viable alternative to traditional vegetative multiplication, capitalizing on the efficiency and adaptability that F1 hybrids can provide.
Industry observers note that seed-propagated strawberries offer a range of benefits, including improved plant health, uniformity, and the potential for broader commercial applications.
These advantages support Planasa’s efforts to remain at the forefront of agricultural innovation.
“By joining forces with ABZ, Planasa reinforces its vision to drive innovation and sustainability in agriculture and establishes us as the pioneer in seed-propagated F1 hybrid for ever-bearing strawberries. The cultivation of seed-propagated strawberry varieties is becoming increasingly popular due to its numerous benefits over traditional propagation methods.”
Kees Konst, Chief Scientific Officer at Planasa
Under Planasa’s leadership, ABZ Seeds will function as a standalone business, safeguarding its proven research capabilities and established customer relationships.
The transaction marks a logical step toward global growth for both companies, as they focus on strengthening product portfolios and innovating new varieties to serve diverse markets.
“Planasa’s commitment to preserving ABZ Seeds’ autonomy reflects its dedication to nurturing the company’s unique strengths and culture,” said Brinkman.
Leadership changes at ABZ Seeds are already in place, with the appointment of seasoned agribusiness executive Marc van Wanroij as CEO.
Having previously served as CEO of Pop Vriend Seeds, van Wanroij brings a wealth of expertise to guide ABZ’s strategic development.
“Marc brings exceptional leadership and deep expertise in the food and agribusiness sector and is eager to lead ABZ into this next phase by expanding the varietal portfolio and providing outstanding service to clients worldwide,” said Brinkmann. He will be present at Fruit Logistica in Berlin on Wednesday, 5 February, and part of Thursday, 6 February, to connect with current and potential business partners.
To facilitate the sale, ABZ Seeds enlisted the services of Oaklins, reputed as the world’s most experienced mid-market M&A advisor.
Oaklins’ team in the Netherlands, led by global horticulture specialist Frank de Hek, provided strategic guidance to ABZ Seeds’ shareholders throughout the transaction.
Their in-depth knowledge of the horticultural sector and history of supporting similar deals proved instrumental in achieving a successful outcome.
Planasa was represented by AKD, an independent Benelux law firm.
Led by Nathalie van Woerkom, the AKD team navigated the complexities of the deal with a pragmatic perspective and robust negotiation skills.
This legal support ensured that the transaction proceeded smoothly, reinforcing Planasa’s commitment to advancing its position as a top-tier innovator in the berry breeding landscape.
By integrating ABZ Seeds’ specialized knowledge with Planasa’s global reach, the combined enterprise is poised to offer growers a diversified and cutting-edge selection of strawberry varieties.
