Publix Achieves Milestone with 100 Million Pounds of Produce Donated to Fight Hunger

Publix has achieved a significant milestone, donating 100 million pounds of produce to Feeding America partner food banks, as noted in a recent press release. This achievement underscores the grocery retailer’s commitment to aiding neighbors facing food insecurity, a mission that intensified in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. At that time, Publix began purchasing produce to support struggling farmers while providing additional fresh fruits and vegetables to food bank partners.

Kevin Murphy, CEO Publix

“As a grocery retailer, we can make our largest impact by helping feed our neighbors in need. Donating 100 million pounds of produce is an example of the difference Publix associates make year-round,” said Publix CEO Kevin Murphy. He expressed pride in the innovative program and emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts to support the communities they serve. Murphy also highlighted that their work is far from finished, with plans to continue providing produce to food bank partners throughout the year.

Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot praised the partnership, stating, “Feeding America is deeply grateful for our partnership with Publix and for the generosity they continue to demonstrate. Their contribution of 100 million pounds of fresh produce makes a meaningful difference to people facing food insecurity. We look forward to continuing to work together in the movement to end hunger.”

To visualize the scale of this donation, 100 million pounds of produce could fill six Publix stores from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. Delivering this amount of produce would require nearly 1,400 fully loaded Publix trailers.

This milestone is part of Publix’s broader commitment to making a difference across its operating area. In 2021, Publix launched the Good Together hunger alleviation campaign, previously known as Feeding More Together.

This initiative unites customers and associates twice a year to provide food for people facing food insecurity. Through the Good Together food donation program, Publix also donates food from its stores that is no longer salable but still safe for consumption.

Additionally, during its fall Publix Serves Week, thousands of company associates volunteer with organizations that assist community members facing hunger. This collective effort further exemplifies Publix’s dedication to community support and hunger alleviation.

Publix’s contributions extend beyond immediate hunger relief. The company’s initiatives reflect a long-term strategy to foster food security and community well-being. By leveraging its resources and encouraging employee and customer participation, Publix continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
