Tart Cherries: The Next Big Food Trend

Tart Cherries: The Next Big Food Trend

Elevating Flavor & Health: The Tart Cherry Revolution

Tart cherries have swiftly gained national attention for their robust flavor, broad culinary uses, and notable health properties.

On March 5, 2025, in Traverse City, Michigan, the Cherry Marketing Institute (CMI) underscored this red superfruit’s surging popularity, revealing that tart cherries have secured the top spot in Pinterest’s 2025 Trend Forecast.

Their ascent goes well beyond the social media-driven “Sleepy Girl Mocktail” sensation, as home cooks, food enthusiasts, and even professional athletes are now embracing tart cherries for everything from sweet snacks to savory sauces.

In addition to their bright, sweet-tart taste, these cherries offer ample nutrients that explain why they are showing up in more recipes each day.

Montmorency tart cherries, grown by a community of 385 family farmers, are widely recognized for containing vitamins C and A, as well as copper and potent plant compounds called anthocyanins.

These elements can benefit overall wellness, and researchers continue to investigate their potential in supporting better health.

Their ubiquity in recipes ranging from morning smoothie bowls and oatmeal to salads and entrees underscores how easily they fit into diverse eating plans.

The spotlight on tart cherries aligns with a broader interest in foods that deliver both flavor and functionality.

“Buzz about tart cherries has skyrocketed over the past year, but we’re just getting started. Their naturally sweet-tart flavor, notable nutrient density and ability to elevate everything from beverages to main dishes make them not only a must-have ingredient, but also the next big food trend. Plus, U.S.-grown Montmorency tart cherries come from 385 family farmers and producers, so every purchase directly supports our farmers and helps sustain multigenerational farming families.”

Amy Cohn, President of the Cherry Marketing Institute (CMI)

Beyond flavor, the scientific interest in tart cherries has also been on the rise.

Over 110 studies on U.S.-grown Montmorency tart cherries have been conducted to date, examining topics such as athletic recovery and sleep enhancement.

Evidence suggests that tart cherry juice may aid muscle repair following intense exercise, leading many fitness-conscious consumers and professional athletes like recent NFL champions to include it in post-workout routines.

Researchers attribute part of this effect to the cherries’ high levels of antioxidants, which may help ease some of the oxidative stress that follows strenuous activity.

Yet the potential benefits extend further, especially for those looking to improve rest.

Montmorency tart cherries are a natural source of melatonin, a hormone involved in regulating sleep-wake cycles.

While the “Sleepy Girl Mocktail” took social media by storm, many nutrition experts point out that the potential sleep-promoting advantages of tart cherries have been recognized in studies for years.

Coupled with their ability to lend a distinctive sweet-tart flavor to beverages, these cherries are increasingly seen as a tasty and functional ingredient for better nighttime routines.

Their versatility also makes tart cherries suitable for quick and easy snacks that fit into any schedule.

In addition to being pressed into juice or pureed into smoothies, dried tart cherries can be tossed into trail mix, stirred into oatmeal, or blended into homemade snack bars.

Chefs and home cooks alike note that the contrast between the tangy fruit and other ingredients be it chocolate, grains, or nuts elevates familiar dishes.

For a refreshing twist, frozen cherries can feature in vegan superfood bars, while tart cherry concentrate is favored for brightening up veggie salads and dressings.

Many restaurants have started incorporating tart cherries in inventive ways, from tangy barbecue sauces to dessert garnishes, leveraging the cherries’ vibrant color and bold taste.

Their potential is practically limitless: mix them into an overnight chia pudding, add them to an afternoon mocktail, or blend them into a robust marinade for savory meats.

The culinary world’s imagination seems boundless when working with an ingredient that is equal parts delicious, nutritious, and flexible.
