Windset Farms: Achieving Consistent Production with Next-Generation Greenhouse Tech

Find out how advanced greenhouse systems secure a steady supply of quality produce for Windset Farms®

Windset Farms® is a family-owned and operated enterprise that has grown from a humble family farm into one of North America’s largest sustainable suppliers of naturally grown produce.

The company’s origins trace back to a simple passion for fresh, greenhouse-grown produce sparked by humble beginnings with a single bell pepper.

Over two decades, this dream of feeding the world has taken shape through state-of-the-art technology, responsible growing practices, and a gentle hand, leading to a thriving business that spans Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Based in areas such as Delta, British Columbia, and Santa Maria, California, Windset Farms® specializes in premium quality tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and specialty produce.

With greenhouses operating year-round in these two key locations, the company is capable of delivering delicious, nutrient-rich produce to consumers across the globe. Its ability to offer consistent quality regardless of season is a testament to its ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability in greenhouse farming.

The business has evolved significantly since its early days. Windset Farms now sells and markets over 2,500 acres of high-tech glasshouse production from its small beginnings, the equivalent of 50,000 acres of field farming.

These vast operations are supported by facilities, including 168 acres of growing area in Santa Maria and 92 acres in Delta.

These sites are equipped with cutting-edge technologies like Ultra-Clima Greenhouses® which allow for precise control over heat, humidity, pressure, and air movement, transforming a passive environment into an active climate that guarantees high yields and quality produce.

Windset Farms has positioned itself as a leader in setting high standards across multiple facets of production.

The company focuses on meticulous seed selection, sustainable growing methods, and integrated pest management. By utilizing natural predators to control pest populations, Windset maintains a commitment to natural pest control.

Their approach to pest management avoids harmful chemicals, aligning with broader environmental goals and preserving the integrity of their produce.

Sustainability lies at the core of Windset’s operations. Their mandate to provide healthy, nutritious food that meets the demands of an increasing population while preserving a delicate planet is evident in every aspect of their work.

The company practices water conservation through recirculating irrigation systems that treat and filter drain water, effectively reducing wastewater and recycling precious resources.

Energy conservation is addressed through the use of thermal screens, dimmable LED lighting, and advanced climate control systems that reduce energy usage and lower the carbon footprint.

The Santa Maria facility’s rooftop solar system and the use of renewable hydroelectric power at the new Delta facility underscore their commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

Windset’s focus on safety and quality extends beyond farming practices to encompass food safety training, comprehensive sanitation protocols, and rigorous third-party certifications.

The company ensures that food safety policies and procedures are strictly enforced, and their facilities and practices are audited to guarantee compliance with safety and hygiene standards. This commitment to safety reassures buyers and consumers that the produce meets high benchmarks for sanitation and quality.

As a family farm, the company shows a strong commitment to its workforce and the communities it serves. Regular social audits ensure that all workers, whether direct employees or partners, work in safe environments with fair wages and good living conditions.

Windset actively supports communities by donating fresh produce to food banks and charities across the West Coast, reflecting the belief that the foundation of a healthy community is affordable and wholesome food.

The company’s recent expansion announcements underline its ongoing growth and dedication to sustainable practices. Windset Farms expanded its Delta, BC greenhouse facility, becoming one the largest lit greenhouse vegetable facilities in Western North America.

This expansion is not just about increased capacity but also about enhancing sustainability through the use of renewable hydroelectric power, LED lighting, biomass boilers, and advanced water recirculation systems. These upgrades position Windset at the forefront of sustainable greenhouse production, achieving record-breaking yields while minimizing energy and water consumption.

Key executives have commented on this progress. John Newell, Chief Operating Officer, highlighted that the Delta facility would leverage renewable energy to support year-round production.

President and CEO Steven Newell underscored the uniqueness of Windset Farms® in being the only greenhouse producer growing year-round from British Columbia, California, and Mexico. The company’s strategic location means its produce is accessible to over 125 million consumers within a 24-hour drive, serving markets in Western North America and Asia with minimal transportation and reduced carbon emissions.

The Delta expansion project also features collaboration with KUBO Greenhouse Projects, a longtime partner noted for its commitment to sustainable greenhouse designs.

The new 24-acre greenhouse in Delta marks another milestone in innovation. KUBO’s expertise has been crucial in constructing a facility that not only meets high production standards but also adheres to strict environmental and energy-saving protocols. Completion of the construction in a record 80 days exemplifies the efficiency and dedication of both companies in pursuing sustainable agricultural expansion.

The current status of Windset Farms® is marked by rapid growth and ongoing investments in technology and infrastructure. The company’s strategic expansion into Delta with new lit facilities will further solidify its leadership in the industry.

By integrating renewable energy sources, sophisticated water treatment and recycling systems, and energy-efficient lighting and climate control, Windset Farms® continues to set new benchmarks for sustainable, high-quality produce.
